Knee injuries are extremely common, especially in the sporting population. Some knee injuries derive from trauma i.e fall/ sporting incident, whilst other knee injuries, particularly around the patella (knee cap) can derive inefficient movement patterns and weaknesses affecting how we move and use our bodies.

Common Knee Conditions Treated:
  • Knee Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Meniscus Tears
  • Ligament Injuries
  • Muscle Strains (quad, hamstring and calf muscle tears and strains)
  • Patella Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee)
  • Chondromalacia Patella

How can physiotherapy help you knee pain?

Physiotherapy can be highly effective in managing and alleviating knee pain. Our physiotherapists can help you to identify and address the underlying causes of knee pain, promote optimal knee function, reduce your pain, enhance mobility, im,prove strength and balance and improve overall quality of life. Here are several ways we can help:

  1. Pain Relief and Management:
    • Manual Therapy: Techniques such as massage, joint mobilization, and manipulation can help reduce pain and improve mobility.
    • Focused Shockwave Therapy for patella tendinopathy and knee osteoarthritis is a great way to help these conditions settle and heal.
    • Acupuncture & Dry Needling: can be a great technique to help reduce pain
    • Modalities: Use of heat, cold, taping and compression help manage pain, swelling and inflammation.
  2. Flexibility and Range of Motion:
    • Stretching Exercises: These help to improve flexibility of the muscles and tendons surrounding the knee, enhancing overall mobility.
    • Range of Motion Exercises: These exercises maintain or increase the knee’s range of motion, preventing stiffness and enhancing function.
  3. Strengthening and Stabilisation:
    • Exercise Programs: Tailored exercise regimens can strengthen the muscles around the knee (like the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves), improving support and reducing strain on the joint.
    • Balance and Proprioception: Exercises that enhance balance and proprioception can help stabilise the knee and prevent further injury.
  4. Gait and Movement Training:
    • Gait Analysis: Assessment and correction of walking patterns can help reduce knee pain and improve functional mobility.
    • Assistive Devices: Recommendation and training in the use of braces, orthotics, or other assistive devices to support the knee.
  5. Rehabilitation Post-Surgery or Injury:
    • Post Operative Physiotherapy and Injury Rehabilitation: Structured programs to restore knee function, strength, and mobility after surgeries such as ACL reconstructions, meniscal surgeries, fractures and knee replacement surgeries.
  6. Preventive Strategies:
    • Injury Prevention: Programs to enhance knee strength, flexibility, and balance, reducing the risk of future injuries.
    • Education and Lifestyle Modifications: Physiotherapists educate patients on body mechanics,  advising on modifications to activities and exercises to avoid further injury or pain.

Kind words from our clients

  • After my ACL reconstruction surgery in February I was unsure of what the next steps were for rehabilitation. NHS physio visits once every six weeks, between 12-20 minutes a time were not very reassuring. I was recommended to visit Movement Matters Physio. Scott has provided me with the best Post Operation Physio I could ask for. Weekly visits to the clinic with changes to my exercises and training plans help keep me motivated and focused on my end goal of returning to sport. My Testing Session gave data which really helped put my progress into perspective and allowed me to see how far I’ve come since starting at Movement Matters Physio. Thank you so much!! 😀

    ACL Reconstruction

  • I first saw Scott a few years back after feeling something go ‘pop’ in my knee during a typical ride out. Scott first helped to deal with the initial pain and then followed with a real focus on improving and preventing the issue returning. I now have a weekly routine to follow that helps to strengthen and stabilise my knees so that when I do jump on the bike my knees are more than capable of handling the load.

    Highly, highly recommended.

    Cycling Knee Issues

  • Excellent, personalised diagnosis, service and home plan. Sean has been so helpful, understanding and patient with me. I am undertaking a long distance hike next year, and I am confident that the personalised programme of exercises will strengthen my legs in preparation.
From booking to session, everyone is friendly, efficient and compassionate.
    I totally recommend Movement Matters!

    Knee Pain

  • I have been seeing Scott from Movement Matters for my Runners Knee injury. I am about a month into my rehab and I am already starting to see great improvement not only physically but Scott has completed changed my mindset to training. He really takes the time to get to know your goals and lifestyle and find the route cause as to why you are possibly injured in the first place. He also designs a realistic Strength & Conditioning plan that you can stick to week by week.

Scott is really focused on understanding why your injured, how to fix it and also looking ahead at the changes you need to make to ensure the problem doesn’t return. For example, last week I had a treadmill session where Scott analysed my heart rate so I knew my pace for those important recovery runs….. something I never actually did when marathon training!!

Everyone at the clinic is super friendly and I can see why so many of my running friends recommend Movement Matters.

    Runners Knee

  • After significant knee surgery in February I am so glad I moved my physio recovery from my health providers in-house Physio team to Movement Matters. With a 12 month recovery, I feel ahead of schedule which is great. Sarah is great and keeps me informed of progress, what to expect next, and the reasons why we are doing what we are doing. The facilities are modern, clean, great location, and the team behind Sarah are always friendly and able to accommodate changes to planned sessions with minimal of fuss and a smile. I would recommend MMP and couldn’t ask for more.

    ACL Reconstruction

  • Have been seeing Scott since my total knee replacement in April, and cannot recommend him and
the rest of the staff enough.
Scott has pushed me and guided me along my rehabilitation from the surgery not only physically but
    mentally too.
Have a perfectly working knee now which is strong and pain free.
Anyone that needs a physio these people are head and shoulders above the competition.

  • I can’t recommend Movement Matters enough. After a complete tear of my quadriceps tendon in
February this year and receiving surgery to repair it I went to Sarah for advice and treatment to help
me return to my active lifestyle. 6 months later due to her excellent treatment advice and care I am
now in Scotland walking the mountains.
I am really impressed with my exercise program aimed at restoring full movement, building strength
    and improving flexibility.
