Recovering from Surgery

Gone are the days where recovering from surgery would only consist of taking pain medication, resting and then going straight back to normal activities, work or the sporting arena.

Recovering from surgery can be scary, unknown, and often people are left to manage it themselves with little or no input.

Here at Movement Matters we are here to guide you through your recovery step by step to ensure you make a safe, full and speedy recovery.

Why choose MMP for pre and post operative physiotherapy?

Our therapists are highly experienced in post operative physiotherapy. We offer a home visit physiotherapy service which allows us to see you super quick after your operation to get you on the road to recovery.

Our facilities and services which include a fully equipped rehabilitation gym enables us to:

  • provide pre-operative physiotherapy to get you fit and strong prior to your operation
  • manage the very early stages of post operative care, to get you back on your feet safely and quickly
  • our Movement & Performance Testing service allows us to highlight areas you need to work on after surgery, and tracks your progress throughout your rehab journey back to full health and fitness.
  • helping you get fitter, stronger and back doing the things you love, whether that is returning to work, walking the dog, picking your children up or returning to sport and fitness.

After significant knee surgery in February I am so glad I moved my physio recovery from my health providers in-house Physio team to Movement Matters. With a 12 month recovery, I feel ahead of schedule which is great. Sarah is great and keeps me informed of progress, what to expect next, and the reasons why we are doing what we are doing. The facilities are modern, clean, great location, and the team behind Sarah are always friendly and able to accommodate changes to planned sessions with minimal of fuss and a smile. I would recommend MMP and couldn't ask for more.

Pre- Surgery Physiotherapy

Pre-surgery physiotherapy, often referred to as “prehabilitation,” offers numerous benefits that can significantly impact the outcome of surgery and the overall recovery process. In summary, pre-surgery physiotherapy can provide a comprehensive approach to preparing for surgery, addressing both physical and psychological aspects, leading to better surgical outcomes and a smoother recovery journey.

Here are some of the key advantages:

Why should you consider having physiotherapy before your operation?

1 – Improved Physical Condition:

Strength and Endurance: Pre-surgery physiotherapy helps in building muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance, which can be beneficial during the post-operative recovery period.
Flexibility and Range of Motion: Exercises designed to improve flexibility and joint mobility can aid in quicker recovery and reduce post-surgery stiffness.

2 – Enhanced Postoperative Recovery:

Faster Recovery Time: Patients who engage in pre-surgery physiotherapy often experience a quicker return to normal activities due to better physical preparedness.
Reduced Pain: Strengthening muscles and improving fitness can help manage postoperative pain more effectively.

3 – Better Surgical Outcomes:

Reduced Complications: Improved physical fitness can lead to fewer postoperative complications such as infections, blood clots, and pneumonia.
Improved Surgical Results: Being in better physical shape can enhance the overall outcome of the surgery, particularly in orthopedic procedures like joint replacements.

4 – Psychological Benefits:

Reduced Anxiety: Engaging in pre-surgery physiotherapy can help reduce anxiety and stress about the upcoming surgery by providing patients with a proactive role in their own recovery.
Increased Confidence: Knowing that they are physically prepared can boost patients’ confidence and mental readiness for surgery.

5 – Tailored Care and Education:

Personalised Exercise Plans: Physiotherapists can create individualized exercise regimens that cater to the specific needs and limitations of the patient, ensuring optimal preparation.
Education and Training: Patients receive education on what to expect during and after surgery, including training in the use of assistive devices and techniques for mobility and self-care.

6 – Reduction in Hospital Stay:

Shorter Hospitalization: With better physical preparation, patients may experience shorter hospital stays due to fewer complications and quicker recovery times.
Optimized Pain Management:

Kind words from our clients

  • I used Scott a few years ago when he worked wonders getting me back on my feet following a hip replacement. This time I had an issue with my knee and didn’t hesitate to return to him.

Scott has provided me with great care, support and treatment throughout, and I have recovered brilliantly. The combination of his treatment and exercise based rehabilitation has worked a treat.

His knowledge is excellent and the practice has great facilities. Would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to get high quality physio.

    Thanks Scott

    Knee Arthritis

  • Really really impressed with the treatment I’ve been receiving, I play football semi pro and suffered a ruptured quadricep, since then I have been seeing Sarah regularly and been given lots of strengthening exercises and it has worked wonders where I’m on the verge of coming back to fitness a lot earlier than scheduled.

I was very impressed with how she has dealt with the situation which is going on at the moment. I was scheduled to see Sarah last Thursday however with the Covid-19 pandemic I was unable to go the clinic, but Sarah said we can do a video consultation instead and couldn’t believe how well this went. We spoke about how I’m getting on etc and then was given new stretches which I was shown by Sarah, and then demonstrated them myself to make sure I had the correct technique and a training plan on my next progression with running and stretches, with the circumstances we are in at the moment I thought the video consultation is a great idea and will continue my progression to get back to fitness and definitely recommend this to anyone.

  • Modern Day Physio at its best!!!

After a serious of illnesses which led to me experiencing daily migraines/headaches, I sought out Movement Matters. Scott did my initial assessment and was able to recreate my headaches/migraines by pressing down on my neck! He came up with a comprehensive treatment plan and explained how the pain was multi-factorial: new parent/lack of sleep/reduction in exercise/stress/desk work. Due to this the recovery process was and still is a self-learning process! I learned a lot from Scott: how I have been over using my upper neck muscles, creating a healthy mindset (acceptance and letting things go) and actually putting me first. This might sound wishy washy to you but the experience has changed my outlook on life and I am very grateful to Scott as I no longer wake up in pain. Should you suffer from pain and are looking for a holistic/modern way of treating pain, please go and book an appointment with Movement Matters now rather than wait for your body to completely break down or burn out. P.S. The receptionists are all really lovely which is an added bonus!

  • After my ACL reconstruction surgery in February I was unsure of what the next steps were for rehabilitation. NHS physio visits once every six weeks, between 12-20 minutes a time were not very reassuring. I was recommended to visit Movement Matters Physio. Scott has provided me with the best Post Operation Physio I could ask for. Weekly visits to the clinic with changes to my exercises and training plans help keep me motivated and focused on my end goal of returning to sport. My Testing Session gave data which really helped put my progress into perspective and allowed me to see how far I’ve come since starting at Movement Matters Physio. Thank you so much!! 😀

  • I have been seeing Beth at Movement Matters for the past few months for a torn tendon, which is slowly recovering under Beth’s expert care. Part of my treatment has included 3 sessions of Shockwave Therapy which has definitely kick started my recovery . I cannot fault this practice in anyway. The whole team there are so friendly, extremely knowledgeable and really go out of their way to help you. I cannot recommend this Practice highly enough and especially Beth for the care and attention she has given me. Thank you to you all.

Shoulder Tendon Pain - Focused Shockwave Therapy

  • I have seen both Scott & Sarah over the past 2 months, following severe damage to my spinal cord.
I have received amazing care & advice, with programmes specifically designed to assist with my development. The equipment & techniques are modern & effective.I have a very long road ahead of me but the progress I have made, after being told 6 months ago I wouldn’t walk, is overwhelming.
My confidence has grown with each session & I am happy that my ongoing journey is going to be with the team at Movement Matters by my side.
The clinic itself is spotless & all of the staff are welcoming & friendly.
    Very highly recommended.

    Spinal Injury

  • My 93 year old father had an emergency hip replacement. After 2 weeks in hospital and 3 weeks at
his home he had made very little progress. We were advised that it would be very difficult for him to
    walk again.
Not wanting to give up we contacted Movement Matters and Beth came to see him for the initial visit.
We were very impressed with what she managed to achieve so booked more sessions.
He has now had 7 sessions seeing either Beth or Scott. Both have worked wonders with him. His
walking is much better and the exercises they have helped him with are improving his overall
    strength.
    I can’t thank them enough

    Hip Replacement

  • I first began using Movement matters physio at the the end of March 2021 after suffering a leg break,
Ankle dislocation and tear of the deltoid ligament. I can’t recommend these guys enough. They have
been so helpful and supportive during my rehab. On my bad days, they lifted me up and made me
determined to keep on going! They gave me all the attention and care I needed and were always so
    helpful and understanding.
18 months later, I went into the studio to do a strength test with them and am so happy with the
results and progress I have made with their help, after being told by doctors that I would be lucky to
get back 80% of my ankle mobility/strength after the injury. Today I matched the strength in weight
and reps with the other leg and am so happy to have recovered the way I have and to be back to
playing football and running after having many doubts whether I’d be able to again. I can’t recommend
Scott and the team enough! They are truly incredible!

    Leg Fracture

  • I was recommended using MMP, and they have been brilliant!!! They have an absolute top notch
team. The receptionists are all extremely welcoming and friendly, and having worked with Scott on a
previous back issue the whole team make you feel part of the MMP family.
This time I had the pleasure of working with Ausrine since injuring a shoulder tendon doing Martial
Arts. My treatment has included Acupuncture, Shockwave Therapy, Massage Therapy as well as
Physical Therapy. Ausrine has been friendly, knowledgeable. Through my personalised program she
has helped to return my shoulder to full functionality, and also highlighted the root cause which was
specific weak areas of my shoulder. Now I have a training program which has been tailored to
compliment my Martial Arts, as well as addressing the weak areas which caused the original issue –

    Back Pain & Shoulder Injury

  • Ausrine was great and picked up my injury from the first appointment and helped me to get the movement & strength testing
needed. Ausrine and Scott have helped me massively, forcing me to rest then helping with my return
to running and a strength and conditioning programme based on my weaknesses to get me back on
track for my iron man. They’ve got me from being a few runs away from causing myself some serious
damage to 3 weeks from my first iron man. Everyone is super helpful and friendly. Can’t recommend
    them

    Chronic Spinal Pain

  • Recommend “Movement Matters’, Scott has been brilliant! 6 months steady treatment with an exercise program has seen me go from scared to go anything strenuous in case my hip pain (arthritis)  become worse, to running 2 – 3 times a week and being pretty much pain free. Scott has helped me build the supportive muscles around my hip to prevent the pain and enable me to return to an activity I love! Thanks Scott.

    Hip pain

  • I have been working with Scott now for over 4 years, originally this was purely just for treatment for a neck injury but during this time I realised the importance of preventing injury and not just seeking help when something goes wrong.

I was also very quick to place all my pain down to something being wrong with my body, but by talking things through with Scott it made me look at other external factors that were affecting my road to recovery i.e sleep, nutrition, mental wellbeing etc.

Once my original injury was under control I continue to have monthly sessions to further improve my fitness and get their guidance on the right conditioning exercises for me. They help me get the right training schedules, varying my exercise to further improve my fitness to tolerate more running.

With their help I have seen improvements in particular areas of weakness and have now been running injury free for over a year and half.

I would highly recommend the team to anyone, especially those who are not just looking for a quick fix and are willing to invest in a longer term solution to support their fitness goals.
