Shoulder pain is a common complaint seen in our physiotherapy clinic and can be quite complex to diagnose and treat at times. This is due to the shoulder having a network of joints; the main gleno-humeral joint (ball and socket joint), the acromioclavicular joint (between your collar bone and shoulder blade) and the sterno-clavicular joint (between the collar bone and sternum). Adding to this is the fact that the shoulder joint is inherently unstable and relies heavily on the soft tissue structures (i.e muscles, ligaments, joint capsule) around it to stabilise, control and move it.
Pain in the shoulder can also be caused from the neck. With the nerves of the neck being irritated and cause pain to radiate down to the shoulder and sometimes down the arm, similar to how the sciatic nerve in the lower back can cause pain in the leg
