Shoulder pain is a common complaint seen in our physiotherapy clinic and can be quite complex to diagnose and treat at times. This is due to the shoulder having a network of joints; the main gleno-humeral joint (ball and socket joint), the acromioclavicular joint (between your collar bone and shoulder blade) and the sterno-clavicular joint (between the collar bone and sternum). Adding to this is the fact that the shoulder joint is inherently unstable and relies heavily on the soft tissue structures (i.e muscles, ligaments, joint capsule) around it to stabilise, control and move it.
Pain in the shoulder can also be caused from the neck. With the nerves of the neck being irritated and cause pain to radiate down to the shoulder and sometimes down the arm, similar to how the sciatic nerve in the lower back can cause pain in the leg

Physiotherapy for shoulder pain offers numerous benefits, addressing both the symptoms and underlying causes. Here are some key benefits:
- Pain Relief: Physiotherapy helps reduce pain through techniques such as manual therapy, massage, acupuncture & dry needling, mobilisations and specific treatment modalities like Focused Shockwave Therapy which is great for treating rotator cuff tendinitis and calcific tendinitis.
- Improved Mobility: Structured exercise programs enhance range of motion, helping to restore normal shoulder function and reduce stiffness.
- Muscle Strengthening: Targeted exercises strengthen the muscles around the shoulder, providing better support and stability, and preventing future injuries.
- Education and Prevention: Patients learn about the mechanics of their shoulder, how to avoid movements that exacerbate pain, and strategies to prevent recurrence.
- Customised Treatment: Each physiotherapy plan is tailored to the individual’s specific condition, ensuring targeted and effective treatment.
- Non-Invasive Treatment: Physiotherapy for shoulder pain provides a non-surgical option for managing shoulder pain, reducing the need for medications and surgeries.
- Post Operative Physiotherapy: Our Physiotherapists are experts in post operative physiotherapy. Post Op Physiotherapy accelerates recovery post-surgery by promoting tissue healing, regaining movement strength and function, reducing recovery time and optimising a safe and effective return to activity sport and fitness.
